Ghana’s mobile money transactions hit GH¢493.2bn in April

Ghana’s mobile money sector continued its rapid expansion in April 2026, with transaction values surging to GH¢493.2 billion across 967 million transactions, according to the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana.

The latest figures mark an increase from the GH¢484.6 billion recorded in March 2026, reinforcing the growing dominance of digital payments in Ghana’s financial ecosystem.

The report showed that registered mobile money accounts climbed to 83 million in April 2026 from 80.5 million in December 2025, while active accounts stood at 26 million.

Mobile money agents also expanded nationwide, with registered agents rising to 992,000 and active agents increasing to 534,000 during the period.

Mobile money float balances grew to GH¢36.7 billion in April from GH¢35.4 billion in March, reflecting heightened transaction activity and increasing consumer reliance on digital financial services.

Interoperability transactions within the mobile money ecosystem reached GH¢5.8 billion, involving 31.7 million transactions during the month under review.

The data further indicated strong growth in instant digital payments, as Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems Instant Pay transactions increased to GH¢79 billion in April 2026 from GH¢71.5 billion in March, with transaction volumes nearing 19.9 million.

Meanwhile, cheque clearing transactions recorded GH¢36.6 billion across 413,000 transactions, while Automated Clearing House Direct Credit transactions hit GH¢13.5 billion involving 816,000 transactions.
