Ghana, Spain deepen agro-industrial ties over tomato value chain -

Ghana is intensifying its efforts to transform agriculture into a key pillar of industrial growth, as Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang leads high-level talks with Spanish food giant GB Foods on major investment opportunities in the country’s agro-processing sector.

The meeting, which brought together senior government officials including Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Ghana’s Ambassador to Spain Kalsoume Sinare Baffoe, centred on repositioning Ghana’s tomato industry from largely raw production into a modern value-chain capable of supporting large-scale processing and distribution.

At the heart of the discussions was a strategy to increase local tomato production, expand processing capacity and create stronger links between smallholder farmers and commercial processors to build a more efficient and profitable supply chain.

Government officials said the initiative is aimed at reducing Ghana’s reliance on imported tomato products, while creating jobs, boosting farmer incomes and strengthening the country’s agro-industrial base.

The talks also examined how partnerships with international agribusiness firms could accelerate technology transfer, improve farming methods and raise the competitiveness of Ghana’s agricultural products in regional and international markets.

Officials further stressed that attracting strategic investors into agriculture remains central to the government’s broader economic agenda, with value addition increasingly being positioned as a critical tool for long-term economic transformation and food security.
