GIPC urges Diaspora to replace remittances with strategic investment

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, Simon Madjie 1111

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Simon Madjie, has called on Ghanaians living abroad to move beyond remittance support and commit to structured investments capable of driving Ghana’s long-term economic transformation.

Speaking at a Bank of Ghana roundtable in Virginia, Mr. Madjie said while remittances remain important to the economy, they cannot deliver the level of industrial growth and sustainable job creation the country needs.

He urged diaspora professionals to channel funds through transparent and secure investment vehicles that offer equity participation, stronger governance and clearly defined exit opportunities for investors.

Mr. Madjie identified Special Purpose Vehicles backed by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund as one of the most practical platforms for diaspora participation, saying such structures help protect assets, improve accountability and reduce investment risk.

He also highlighted key sectors with strong potential for diaspora capital, including agro-processing, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, digital innovation and electric mobility.

According to the GIPC boss, recent regulatory reforms, including oversight of emerging sectors such as Cryptocurrency, reflect Ghana’s efforts to build a more modern and investor-friendly business environment.

The roundtable brought together diaspora professionals, policymakers and business leaders to examine practical ways of directing diaspora capital into high-impact sectors of the Ghanaian economy.
